Once I found out that I was pregnant, I surrounded myself with books on pregnancy and childbirth. But I didn’t only want to learn about how best to prepare for childbirth through books, especially since those books were generally geared towards people living in the US or UK. So, I sought out a course that would also give me — an English-speaking migrant living in the Netherlands — the opportunity to find out more about how pregnancy and childbirth were ‘done’ in the Dutch health system. I also wanted to have a chance to meet other expecting mothers who were going through the same things I was and had similar concerns and questions.
Chitra’s class was invaluable for both my partner and for me! She’s a great instructor and her passion for the topic is unparalleled. In addition to covering the basics about what happens physiologically to both mother and baby during labour and birth, she brings her international training in diverse techniques (e.g., Lamaze and Hypnobirthing) to the course. This enables expecting parents to know what to expect and when, alleviating fears of the unknown and of what might not go according to plan; to learn how to reduce their anxieties through breathing and movement; and to discover how best to advocate for themselves not only during pregnancy and childbirth (e.g., with midwives, doctors and family members) but also in the post-partum recovery phase (e.g., with kraamzorgsters, family and friends). Especially interesting for me were topics like how to write birth plans, phases of labour (there are a number of them I had never heard about previously – get ready!), managing contractions and labour pain, and breastfeeding. My partner also really appreciated having other expecting fathers present in the course, and the techniques he learned (e.g., providing support to women in labour through massage and emotional care) were very helpful throughout my 52 hours of labour!
I would absolutely recommend Chitra’s class to others expecting mothers and fathers who are looking for a course in English. Whether you’re unfamiliar with the process of childbirth more generally speaking or with how it is supported in the Netherlands more specifically, you’ll really benefit from the course. By the end of the course, you’ll feel more aware, more confident and better equipped for what lies ahead. Peace of mind and a positive, flexible attitude are so important in such a life-changing moment.

We were expecting our first baby and as we’re not Dutch, we were looking for recommendations for a child birth preparation course in English. When asking around, everyone pointed is to the same person – Chitra Natarajan. Chitra provide an English speaking course that everyone spoke so highly of! All the ladies that I had asked had mentioned how much they liked Chitra’s natural approach to childbirth.
Being our first baby and first birth, we were pretty anxious and did not completely know what to expect. Chitra had a very lovely way of presenting the facts, but also the emotions. Chitra’s class helped us calm down and get more confidence in our instincts, while providing techniques to do so, both physically and spiritually.
The birth of our daughter, Salma, was the most beautiful experience I have ever had. Chitra’s class and everything we learned in it contributed a lot to making it as beautiful as it was! Absolutely recommended!
